Why is my Computer So Slow?
One of the things that can really slow down the performance of your computer is the system registry. This is a database used by Windows to store information about all the different programs on your computer. Over time, as you install and uninstall new programs, and change their settings, the registry can become corrupted with out of date information. This can lead to system errors, instability and general slowdown.
In fact, if the registry becomes too corrupted, it can stop your computer from working entirely. When this happens, you usually get the dreaded “blue screen of death”, which is a blue coloured screen that Windows shows before shutting down the computer. This basically means that you will not be able to run Windows or use any of your programs.
The registry is huge and massively complicated, so even though it is possible to edit it by hand, you could find that you need to look through millions of records to find the corrupted entries. This is a task so immensely difficult is that not even the best experts attempt it.
Instead, they will use specialised software which scans through the registry, finds errors, and then helps you to correct them.
There are a few different programs on the market which do this, you should particularly look for software which allows you to make a backup of the registry, so that you can restore it if there are any problems with the recovery process. This gives you an added layer of protection, and can also be used to make a backup of the registry when it is in good condition so that you can restore it if all else fails.
Before you invest any money in a registry repair program, I recommend that you do a free scan of your registry to see if there are any errors that need to be fixed. Click here to download Registry Easy. It can be downloaded for free and be used to scan your registry. It is also one of the best programs on the market, you can do have a problem you can upgrade to the paid version and fix it.

Getting Rid of Useless Start-Up Programs
One of the simplest things that you can do to speed up your computer is to take control of the start-up programs, which are programs which automatically run when Windows starts. When I did this, the change was so dramatic that I fall I had the complete answer to “why is my computer so slow?” I later found out that there was more to the situation, but this one step really made a huge difference.
When Windows is newly installed on a computer, there are only a few programs that automatically start when your computer boots up. Over time, as you add more programs, this list can grow and grow until you have dozens of programs starting up by themselves each time Windows starts. Each of these programs will usually create an icon in the right hand side of the taskbar, although there will be some that don’t do this. It can get so cluttered that you need to click on an arrow to see them all.
When your computer is starting, you will need to wait for all of these programs to load up, which can take a long time. What’s more, with each one of these programs using up system resources, it can really slow your computer down.
The sad thing is that many of these programs are not really doing you any good. In other words they’re not programs that you often need or use. Luckily, it’s relatively easy to configure your computer so that it will not load these programs at start-up.
All you need to do is use the Windows system configuration tool. You can access this in Windows XP by clicking on “Start”, then on run, and typing in msconfig. Once you’ve done this, press enter and then Windows will launch the system configuration tool.
In Vista, it is a little bit easier to access the config tool. Just click on the Windows symbol in the taskbar, to access the start menu. Then type msconfig in the search box at the bottom and hit return.
There is a tab of all the different start-up programs, so click on this and then you will be able to control which program start-up. You will see a list of all the programs, with a checkbox next to each one. Just uncheck the programs that you want to stop. If you are not sure what the program does, and you don’t want to stop it if it is important, there is a website which lists all of the most common programs and tells you what they do. You can see this list at http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php
Once you’re done, just press apply, and then restart your computer. You will find all of these useless start-up programs are now deactivated. This step alone can do a lot to speed up your computer.
Why do Computers Become Slow?
If you ask any computer owner, I’m sure you’ll find that at some point they have asked themselves “why is my computer so slow?”. For some users, their computer has taken a couple of years to become slow. For others, it happened in a matter of months. And for others it appeared to happen overnight. The point is that it’s a common experience that seems to affect everybody at some point or other.
There are quite a few people who think that this is evidence of a plot to force us to frequently buy new computers. I don’t subscribe to that myself, and I am going to tell you the reasons why.
Now, over the years I’ve seen a lot of different models of computer appear and disappear from the market, and I can quite confidently say that for the last 10 years most people have been using computers for the same thing, such as word processing, databases, spreadsheets, e-mail and web. So there is some truth to the fact that we are being sold new computers to do things that we were able to do on older computers.
However, in some areas the new, high-performance features a modern computers are important. For instance, video games require more power today than they did in the past. Also, people using their computers more for multimedia functions these days. They expect to store large quantities of music and video on their computer, and also a lot of people are getting into making their own videos these days.
With widespread broadband, the type of content we are accessing over the Internet has become richer, requiring a more powerful machine to process it.
So the fact is there is a naturally occurring demand for newer, more powerful computers, which means that computer manufacturers don’t need to resort to underhanded tactics in order to sell their wares. (That’s not to say that they don’t sometimes sell powerful computers to people who don’t need them.)
So, if it’s not evidence of an evil plot, why is it that computers become slow?
There are a number of different factors that can slow down your computer, and on this site I am going to be taking them up and telling you what you can do about each of them. For instance, it’s possible that a virus or other malware can infect your computer and slow it down considerably, and this is something you should suspect is a change in speed has been drastic and sudden. So I’m going to be talking about some of the tools and software that you can use to fix problems like these.
My New Site
So, this is the first post on my new website. Basically this website revolves around a single question, which is “Why is my computer so slow?” I to answer that question for you and give you some solutions that you can use to speed things up. What I am going to do on this site is talk about some of the different reasons why your computer can slow down, and give you a solution for each. Often, it will be more than one of these problems that are causing the slowdown. Also, from time to time, everyone will experience at least one of these problems, so it’s a good idea to work through them all. I’m sure you will experience a great boost in performance.
Hi this is Martin Walker. I created this website because I was fed up of the way my computers kept getting slower over time. There was nothing unusual about the way that I was using them, so I decided to get to the bottom of this. I looked on the internet, and spoke to people to discover the answer to the question "why is my computer so slow?". Along the way, I found out that lots of other people are having the same problem, so decided to make a website where I could tell people about the solutions I found.
